MetaVR has built high resolution geospecific 3D terrain of Hajin, Syria. This virtual terrain, available in MetaVR's round-earth Metadesic format for use with VRSG in simulation and training, provides the opportunity for conducting challenging exercises within a dense Middle Eastern urban area.
Hajin is a small city located in eastern Syria near the Iraqi-Syrian border, situated along the Euphrates River. Beginning in 2017 and throughout most of 2018, Hajin served as an ISIL-controlled stronghold. The city was liberated in December 2018 by a coalition of US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Kurdish soldiers and Arab tribesmen liberated Hajin.
MetaVR’s 3D terrain reflects the city’s massive rebuilding effort taking place in the city center where nearly every building had been damaged or destroyed.
Virtual Hajin was built in MetaVR Terrain Tools for Esri ArcGIS from geospecific high-resolution imagery and elevation source data: 50 cm high-resolution imagery licensed from Digital Globe blended to underlying 1-2 meter imagery of all of Syria; SRTM elevation data compiled with a 30-meter elevation post spacing.
Cultural features include 112 geospecific building models, 13,326 CityEngine building models, 25,478 vegetation models, plus power lines and 1,376 streetlights. For nighttime viewing, all the building models contain emissive light-map textures and 22 of the geospecific buildings have light lobes (some have multiple light lobes). All of the streetlights contain light lobes as well. Models were placed on the terrain with Scenario Editor.
This terrain is built entirely from commercial, non-export controlled source data. Using MetaVR’s terrain workflow process, additional terrain areas in the region can easily be constructed.
MetaVR's Hajin, Syria, 3D terrain is available free of charge to MetaVR customers who are on active software maintenance and are US Government or NATO agencies or contractors (for official use only). The terrain is provided in MetaVR's round-earth terrain format and will only run with a valid VRSG software license with active software maintenance.
